Article 1 - Interesting Ways to Save Water

Interesting Ways to Save Water in your House

Way back in 1830, the average person used around 18 litres of water a day – hardly anything compared to the 144+ litres we now use on average. These figures are especially interesting when you consider how little we used to get by on, whereas now we can use more than 60 litres in a single shower.

Interestingly, a recent report on the BBC website highlighted the showering habits of the UK population – we’ve all come to think that having a shower instead of a bath saves water. Sometimes this is true, but if you use a power shower, you can end up using double the amount of water and energy. This has fairly serious consequences for our bills, not to mention the impact it has on the environment.

However, a few changes to the way we use water could save a significant amount…

In the bathroom
Bathroom furniture can be one of the main culprits when it comes to wasted water. The toilet is one appliance where we could all make some changes. One trick is to put some food colouring into the toilet tank: if you can see it leak out into the bowl without having to flush it, this is a sure sign you’ve got a leak and are wasting water. Another thing you could try is putting a brick into the toilet tank. The idea behind this is that it displaces some of the water in the tank so that it can flush using less liquid – you might only save a small amount of water with each flush, but when you consider how often the toilet is used, it all adds up.

Of course, we can’t talk about bathrooms without discussing the shower. Most of us like to think we’re pretty good about the time we spend showering, but we actually spend more time in there than we think. When you’re choosing bathroom suites, how much water the shower uses probably isn’t at the top of your mind (and power showers are definitely tempting), but you can now get devices that you install on the shower to reduce the pressure of the water.

This means you use less water over the course of your shower. Alternatively, if you can’t bear the thought of losing your power shower, find yourself an upbeat song that lasts for three or four minutes and blast it out while you’re in the shower. When the song ends, it’s time to get out.

Around the house
It isn’t just the bathroom where we waste water. One tip that comes up quite regularly is to use your leftover washing up water on your garden, so rather than pouring away the old water and using fresh on the garden, you essentially get two for the price of one. You can also use rainwater for pretty much the same purpose; collect it in drums and use it to water the plants.

There are loads more ways to save water around the house and most of them are pretty easy to implement. Some of them could even be quite fun, so who’s up for the challenge?
